Quality is not an act, it is a habit, It is never by accident, it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wisest choice of many alternatives. The Quality Maintenance (QM) pillar ensures that zero defects conditions are established and maintained in the work environment, processes, and the final product.
Ensuring Zero Defects Conditions
The QM pillar is the guardian of quality in the manufacturing world. It tirelessly works to establish and maintain zero defects conditions across the production spectrum, from equipment and processes to the final product. Its mission is to detect and control deviations from the norm, ensuring early intervention to prevent irreversible damage to processes and products.
One of the QM pillar's most remarkable feats is its ability to reduce the cost of quality. It achieves this by minimizing waste, reworks, customer complaints, and the need for extensive inspection. Instead of relying on rigorous inspection systems to detect defects after the fact, QM focuses on preventing defects from occurring in the first place.
Building on a Strong Foundation
To stand firm, the QM pillar depends on the foundational elements of the WCM structure. These include:
6S: This ensures a clean and organized work environment, preventing contamination and facilitating smooth processes.
Group Activities: Effective communication and coordination are essential for implementing QM tools like the Quality Maintenance Matrix and FMEA.
Visual Management: Clear labeling and visual indicators streamline operations, making it easier to detect abnormalities and ensure safety.
These elements create operational stability and support the QM pillar in maintaining quality.
QM in Action
The QM pillar creates a system that optimizes equipment conditions, maintains ideal quality, and prevents defects. It achieves this through a sequence of seven powerful tools:
Seven Quality Control Tools: Check sheets, graphs, histograms, Pareto analysis, cause-and-effect diagrams, scatter diagrams, and control charts. These tools uncover existing conditions, investigate defects, and establish quality standards.
Quality Assurance Matrix: Correlates defects with equipment, processes, or operations, exposing sources of defects.
4M Analysis: Examines Man, Machine, Method, and Material (expanded to 8M in some cases) to uncover surface conditions that lead to defects.
Corrective and Preventive Action Plan (CPAP): Assigns action items to address issues identified by the 4M analysis, aiming to eliminate or mitigate non-conformities.
Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) or PM - Analysis/DOE: These intermediate tools identify potential sources of failures in design, equipment, processes, and products.
Standardized Inspection Methods: Establishes competent, independent inspection methods with data collection, analysis, and reporting for quality control.
Quality Maintenance Matrix: Visualizes critical parameters for optimum performance and ensures the maintenance of quality standards.
By following this sequence of tools, the QM pillar optimizes quality within the manufacturing setup.
In the world of manufacturing, quality is not just an aspiration; it's a habit, a culture, and a commitment. The Quality Maintenance (QM) pillar of World Class Manufacturing embodies this commitment. It works tirelessly to prevent defects, reduce waste, and maintain the highest standards of quality. With its arsenal of tools and a foundation built on 6S, group activities, and visual management, the QM pillar ensures that quality is not just a result; it's a way of life in the world of manufacturing excellence.
